How to Make a Day of the Dead Pet Video With Marigolds and Candles

Día de Muertos, on November 1 and 2, is a Mexican celebration where families remember loved ones with altars, marigolds, candles and food, and many include their pets. The Day of the Dead Pet template on MagicTakes makes a warm 8-second clip of your dog or cat with a marigold crown among candles and papel picado. This guide covers the photo, the two scenes and how to keep it respectful.

What the Day of the Dead pet video is

Your pet gets a crown of fresh orange and yellow marigolds and a delicate, colourful pattern painted softly on the fur of its face: small flowers, dots and swirls around the eyes and on the forehead, inspired by sugar skulls. It is decorative, like festive face paint, and never a real skull. Your pet's face shape, eyes, fur and markings stay exactly the same.

For the first two seconds your pet sits calmly in the candle light, glancing around as the flames flicker. From two to five seconds it turns its head toward you and blinks softly while the papel picado sways above. In the last three seconds marigold petals drift down through the warm light as the camera moves in close on its face.

The tone is calm and festive, not spooky. It suits a pet who is with you now as well as one you want to remember.

How to make it on MagicTakes

  1. Open the Day of the Dead Pet template.
  2. Upload one photo of your pet, with its whole head and ears in view.
  3. Choose a scene: Candle-lit altar or Marigold path.
  4. Tap Make my take. It costs 40 credits, and your first take is free with a small magictakes.com mark.
  5. Wait two to four minutes. You can leave the page; the take is saved in your library when it is ready.
  6. Download the 8-second 9:16 MP4 and share it.

Which photo works best

The crown has to sit on the head and the pattern has to sit on the face, so both need to be clearly visible.

If your only photos are old or a little soft, crop in so your pet's face fills most of the frame before you upload. A tighter crop helps the crown and pattern sit in the right place.

  • One pet facing the camera, filling most of the photo
  • The whole head and both ears in view, so the crown fits
  • A close photo, so the face pattern stays light and the markings show through
  • Bright and sharp, without filters
  • For a pet who has passed, pick the clearest photo you have, even if it isn't the most recent

Candle-lit altar or Marigold path

Candle-lit altar places your pet on a wooden table covered with marigold petals, part of a festive home altar, an ofrenda, with rows of lit candles, marigolds and pan de muerto, papel picado above and a dark, cozy background. It is closest to how families set up for the celebration at home, it is the one in our example, and it is the most fitting choice for remembering a pet.

Marigold path puts your pet on an outdoor path of scattered marigold petals at dusk, lined with small candles, with papel picado overhead and a soft purple sky behind, while the camera glides along the path toward it. It is lighter and more open, a good fit for a colourful autumn post.

Ideas for sharing it

Takes are silent 9:16 MP4 files, so they work on TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts as they are, and play well in a family chat too.

  • Share it on November 1 or 2 with a few words about your pet
  • For a pet who has passed, send it privately to the people who knew them before posting it publicly
  • Pair it with an old photo of your pet as a small tribute
  • Use it as a colourful autumn card for family

When a take doesn't look right

  • The face pattern hides your pet's markings: use a sharper, closer photo where the face fills more of the frame.
  • The crown sits off the head: use a photo with the whole head and both ears in view.
  • It doesn't look like your pet: use a bright, front-facing photo without filters, and make another take if one drifts.
  • A take failed to generate: its credits go back to your balance automatically.

Keeping it respectful

Día de Muertos is a day of remembrance, not a Halloween costume. The template keeps to its warm side: marigolds, candles, papel picado and a decorative pattern, with nothing scary or mocking. When you post, a line about what the day means, or about the pet you are remembering, goes a long way.

Use a photo of your own pet, or of a pet whose owner agreed. If a person is in the photo, crop them out first. Uploads are deleted after 30 days, and your takes stay private unless you share them.

Questions

Is this a Halloween template?

It sits next to the Halloween templates because the dates are close, but Día de Muertos is its own celebration of remembrance. The video has no spooky elements.

Can I make it for a pet who has died?

Yes. Many people use it that way. Choose the clearest photo you have, ideally with the whole head in view.

Do I need to pick the colours?

No. The marigolds and pattern colours are set by the template, in marigold and gentle pastel tones.

What does it cost after the free take?

40 credits a take. Packs start at $9.99 for 100 credits, and credits never expire.
